Italy, officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica Italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic located in the center of Central Europe (southern Europe). To the north, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps. To the south, which consists of the entire Italian peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia, the two largest islands of the Mediterranean Sea and many other smaller islands are located throughout the Italian territory. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican are enclaves in the interior of Italy, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian enclave in Switzerland. The territory of the country covers about 301 338 km² and is influenced by a seasonal temperate climate. With 60.6 million inhabitants, it is the fifth most populous country in Europe and the 23rd in the world.
